MI vs CSK Today Match Prediction | Who Will Win Match 33, IPL 2026? Betting Tips
Thursday night at Wankhede and two teams who desperately need a win are about to find out which one of them gets it. Our MI vs CSK Today Match Prediction backs Chennai Super Kings and we will explain exactly why, but first, can we just acknowledge that this match has MS Dhoni potentially making his season debut at the one ground in India where the crowd loses its mind the moment he walks through the gate.
Match 33 — What You Need to Know
TATA IPL 2026, Match 33. Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings. Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. 7:30 PM IST on Thursday 23rd April 2026. Star Sports 1 HD and Star Sports 3 on television, JioHotstar for the stream. Both teams have won two and lost four. Both have four points. Neither can afford to keep losing. Simple as that.
Mumbai Indians — The Tilak Verma Problem
It is not really a problem. Having a batter who can score 101 off 45 balls is never a problem. The issue is that MI have become so reliant on him that when he does not fire, nobody knows who picks up the slack.
Look at how the GT game unfolded. The top order went cheaply. MI were in trouble before the innings had found its feet. Then Tilak arrived and the whole thing changed. Naman Dhir had given it a base with 45 off 32, fair enough, but Tilak was the reason that total reached 199. He leads MI's batting charts with 144 runs this season and the distance between him and the next name on that list is uncomfortable reading for Hardik Pandya.
Suryakumar Yadav is the one other genuine match-winner in this lineup. 328 runs across his last 10 matches at a strike rate of 157.69 and he has always treated Wankhede like a personal playground. CSK will know that. They will have talked about it. Getting him early is probably their single most important task with the ball.
The bowling was actually very good against GT and that matters tonight. Bumrah got a first-ball wicket of Sudharshan, bowled three overs for 15 runs and looked properly menacing again. His economy sits at 8.14 for the season and his ability to shift a game in a single over has not gone anywhere. Ashwani Kumar has gone from relative unknown to genuine threat in the space of a few weeks. His 4/24 against GT was not a one-off, he has been building to this and teams are now properly preparing for him. Ghazanfar took two late wickets, Santner was tidy, Hardik got Butler and GT were bowled out for 100. It was a complete bowling performance.
Rohit Sharma is still the unanswered question. Paras Mhambrey keeps saying he is fit. He sat out the GT game anyway. No explanation, no confirmed return date. Against CSK at Wankhede, MI need their openers to at least give Tilak and SKY something to build on rather than coming in to repair damage again.
Chennai Super Kings — Gaikwad Needs to Wake Up
Eight place. Net run rate of -0.780. Two wins from six. CSK have had seasons that started better and still made the final, so the table position alone is not the full story. The issue is the consistency, or complete lack of it.
Three losses to open, two wins at Chepauk to get the blood pumping again, and then SRH came to town on April 18 and sent them packing with a 10-run defeat. CSK were chasing 195 and got to 184/8. Not a disaster but close enough to one.
Mhatre's injury is the real gut punch. He was their most dangerous batter, 201 runs before the hamstring tear ended his IPL 2026 entirely. Six to twelve weeks of rehabilitation. A massive hole at the top of the order that somebody has to fill tonight. Urvil Patel is the expected replacement and if ever there was a match to throw him in at the deep end, Wankhede on a dew-heavy evening is it. His strike rate in IPL 2025 was 212.5 and he scored the fastest T20 hundred by an Indian batter in domestic cricket off 28 balls. He has the tools. Whether he gets the opportunity tonight is the question.
Sanju Samson has quietly become the backbone of this CSK batting order. 192 runs in five innings with a 115 not out already tucked away this season. With Mhatre gone he will know the team leans on him even more and that tends to bring the best out of him rather than the worst. Sarfaraz Khan at 147 runs and a strike rate of 170.93 gives the middle order proper firepower and Shivam Dube has made 123 useful runs. But Ruturaj Gaikwad's 82 runs in six matches as captain and opener keeps coming up in every team talk and it should. That is not good enough from him and tonight at Wankhede he needs a proper score.
With the ball, Kamboj is simply the standout performer of this CSK season without question. 13 wickets in six matches and a Purple Cap challenge that is very much alive. He takes wickets in the powerplay, in the middle overs and at the death. MI's top order will have their work cut out against him. Jamie Overton deserves far more credit than he gets. Four wickets against SRH, a season best of 4/18, and a habit of producing his best performances in the biggest games. Between those two CSK have a bowling attack capable of restricting MI to a chaseable total.
If Dhoni Plays, Everything Changes
Not just the batting order. The whole feel of the match shifts when Dhoni is in the eleven and everyone in that CSK dressing room knows it. Fleming confirmed on April 17 that he is fully fit and training at full intensity. He still sat out the SRH game on April 18 and nobody has explained why. Tonight is the night if there ever was one. Wankhede, Mumbai Indians, a match CSK absolutely have to win. His finishing ability is well documented but what he does to the belief of the eight batters ahead of him is just as important. CSK with Dhoni available is a team that feels different in the last four overs.
Pitch Report — Wankhede Stadium
Short boundaries, fast outfield, pace and bounce from the surface. Wankhede does not hide what it is. Par score this season has been 215 to 225 and that benchmark will be in both captain's heads tonight. Pacers account for 71% of wickets at this ground. Spinners struggle. Teams batting second have won 54% of matches here and dew builds heavily through the second innings every night this week. The conditions at Wankhede tonight are set up for whoever is chasing and both captains know it before a single coin is flipped.
Weather — Mumbai, April 23
Clear skies, no rain, not even a cloud to worry about. Temperatures drop to 29°C to 30°C by match time and humidity climbs to nearly 70% through the night. That humidity is the number that matters for tactics. Dew builds steadily, spinners lose their grip on the ball and the chase gets easier as the overs tick by. A full 40-over game is a certainty tonight.
IPL Toss Prediction
Our IPL toss prediction backs CSK to win the toss and field first. Dew, short boundaries, a surface that suits batting, a ground where chasing sides win more than half the time. Every single factor points in one direction tonight. If Hardik wins the toss instead he makes the same call because he would be making a mistake if he did not. Bowl first, chase under dew. Sorted.
Betting Insights — Match 33

Final Word — MI vs CSK Today Match Prediction
Here is where we land. Our MI vs CSK Today Match Prediction is CSK to win, chasing, at Wankhede. MI have shown they can bowl a team out cheaply and Tilak plus SKY give them a batting combination that can post a big total. But on this surface, with this much dew, against a CSK middle order featuring Samson, Sarfaraz and Dube with Dhoni potentially finishing the innings, defending any total under 200 feels like a gamble that does not pay off. CSK 65%, MI 35%. Chennai win tonight.
Prediction: CSK to win Match 33, IPL 2026.
